Grand Rapids Boys Basketball Headed to the Minnesota State Tournament
The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks boys basketball are headed to the Minnesota State High School League Boys Basketball State Tournament after capturing the Section 7AAA Championship with an exciting 60–53 victory over Hibbing.
The championship win secured Grand Rapids a place among the eight teams competing in the Class AAA state tournament, which will be held March 24–28 in Minneapolis at Williams Arena and the Target Center.
This appearance marks a special milestone for the Thunderhawks program. The last time Grand Rapids advanced to the state tournament was 2017, making this year’s run a memorable accomplishment for the players, coaches, and community.
Throughout the section tournament, the Thunderhawks demonstrated strong defense, balanced scoring, and relentless effort. After victories over North Branch and Chisago Lakes, Grand Rapids faced rival Hibbing in the section championship. The Thunderhawks’ defensive intensity and composure down the stretch helped secure the program’s long-awaited return to the state stage.
For the players, earning the opportunity to compete at state represents the culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and teamwork. For the community of Grand Rapids, it is a chance to rally behind the team and celebrate one of Minnesota’s greatest high school sports traditions.
